Common Reiki misconceptions
By Body, Mind & Ki
What is Reiki Healing?
Reiki is not a new practice, in fact Reiki originated in 1922! It is, however, new for a lot of people. I’m here to answer some common questions I have been getting lately.
First up is…
Is Reiki like a massage?
Nope!
This is a common misconception. Yes, you do lie on a table that very well could be used for massage and, you will relax but, Reiki does not involve massaging the body. Your practitioner’s hands will hover closely above or be laid gently on your body. There will not be any pressure applied. You can lay back, relax, and let the Reiki flow!
Ok. So…
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a safe, non-invasive, Japanese healing technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It promotes healing!
What to wear during Reiki?
You may be asked to remove your shoes and jewelry but will otherwise be fully clothed. Your Reiki Practitioner or Master should never ask you to remove your clothing. What do I do during a Reiki healing? Get comfortable and relax! You can lay down or remain seated. In some cases, you and your Reiki practitioner may choose to set an intention.
Some Practitioners include ‘add-on’ services. These are not required for Reiki to work but may complement Reiki.
How does Reiki work?
Reiki, the spiritually guided, life force energy, flows from the practitioner to the client. Reiki knows exactly where to go and how to respond to restrictions in its flow. Reiki washes away the negative thoughts and feelings and replaces them with positives!
What does Reiki treat?
Reiki treats the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. Reiki is an important part of a holistic health plan.
How does Reiki promote healing?
Reiki treats the whole person, body, mind and spirit and has a multitude of benefits!
Some of the benefits of Reiki include:
– stress reduction
– calm an overactive mind
– rejuvenate after sporting events
– reduce or eliminate feelings of anxiety or depression
– shorten healing time and promote recovery
– reduce side effects of medical treatments (many chemotherapy patients see a Reiki Practitioner to help reduce the uncomfortable side effects of the treatment). Check out Solaris Cancer Care for more on Reiki during chemotherapy.
– enhance quality of life
Your Reiki Practitioner will work with your Ki – the life force energy that flows through and animates all living things. It causes us to be alive. Plants, animals, and humans alike. We all have a life force energy!
How do I know if the energy healing I am receiving is Reiki?
Always find a trusted Reiki Practitioner. If things feel suss, they probably are! I suggest locating your Reiki Practitioner through a membership Organisation. These organisations have strict requirements and a thorough application process. I am a Member of Reiki Australia. In fact, I served a term on the Reiki Australia Board of directors serving as Secretary and Chair. Now, I am Operations Manager for Reiki Australia and host some of their events!

Why Should I receive Reiki?
With regular Reiki treatment and a commitment to accept responsibility for your own healing you will see positive changes in every aspect of your life!
Does Reiki work on animals?
Yes, animals love Reiki! In fact, my beautiful dog, Pedro, is always drawn to the room whenever I am practicing Reiki.
It is also important to note what Reiki is NOT.
Reiki is not a religion. Reiki is spiritual in nature; however, it is NOT a religion. People of all backgrounds practice Reiki daily!
Reiki is not a massage. Nor is it acupuncture – there is no pain involved and certainly no needles!
Reiki will never hurt or cause you pain. Do you have another Reiki question? Email it to me at bodymindki@gmail.com or contact Reiki Australia at contact@reikiaustralia.com.au
